REVIEW | Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipstick! (Swatches on arm + lips)

Here I am, back with another matte lip cream post! I swear to you, this is the only kind of lipstick I wear anymore. I tried to wear some of my old regular lipsticks recently and it didn't look or feel right. Matte lipsticks have been my obsession for almost a year now. If you haven't seen my drugstore matte lip cream post yet, I highly recommend checking it out. I worked really hard on that post and tried a lot of different matte lip creams before I decided on the best ones.

Today, I am super excited to be reviewing Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipsticks. I fell in love with these liquid lipsticks before they even came out. Back in high school, my friend Hannah (hi, Hannah!) showed me the swatches on Jeffree Star's instagram before he had even released them. We were both amazed by how a liquid lipstick could possibly dry fully matte with such astounding pigment! This was back before matte lip creams had really made an appearance to the general public. Anyway, about three or so years later, I was lucky enough to get four JS lipsticks for Christmas from my cousin, Kara. I was so excited to try them and get my first impressions, as well as to wear them over a few weeks to get a good feel for them. It's been over a month since I got them, so I feel like I have a good feel on how they work. This will be a very honest review, so keep reading!

The colors I have are Masochist, Redrum, Designer Blood, and Dominatrix. These are all very red toned shades, except for Dominatrix, which is a true brown. I mostly wear red shades, so my cousin picked out the perfect selection. She also got me two lip scrubs, in Gingerbread and Hot Cocoa. They work really well but aren't too different from any other lip scrub I've tried.

To start off, I want to say that I have a lot that I love about these lipsticks, but also a lot that I'm not very fond of. My first impressions didn't live up to my expectations, which was kind of a bummer. However, I still made sure to give them a fair chance and I wore them a good amount over the last month to see how they would wear and how I could improve the parts I didn't love. Here's what I've got so far:

Pros:

  • They have amazing pigment and the colors are absolutely beautiful
  • They are incredibly long lasting (and even hard to get off!)
  • They are vegan and cruelty free
  • They dry matte very quickly and don't show fine lines

Cons:

  • They never fully dry down, they are always a bit tacky without feeling actually sticky
  • They are not transfer proof at all. The color will end up all over your drink or food or whoever you're kissing.
  • They do feather during long wear
  • The brush applicator is awful. This is my biggest con. It is almost impossible to accentuate your cupid's bow without getting it all over your face (and once it's on your face, it's almost impossible to get off).

Okay, now that you know my general pros and cons, let's get into the specific shades!

Masochist

Masochist is a beautiful red toned pink. The website describes it as a "dark pink," but for me it is very bright as opposed to dark. I wish it showed up darker on my lips, I think I would wear it a lot more if it did. However, this will be a great color for spring and summer and I'm excited to get a lot of wear out of it during that time!

Redrum

Redrum is definitely my favorite out of all of them. I am a sucker for a good solid red lipstick, and that is what this is. I honestly can't describe it anymore than that. It is a classic bright red, and if red can be neutral, this is a neutral red. I could wear this shade with everything I own.

Designer Blood

Designer Blood was a limited edition shade around the holidays. It is said to be the popular Unicorn Blood shade with added gold in it for a shine. This shade really doesn't turn out looking like the shade in the bottle. It dries a very beautiful burgundy color. This is probably my second favorite shade, it is guaranteed to get me lots of compliments when I wear it!

Dominatrix

Dominatrix is a true brown. It is dark and has beautiful pigment. For anyone looking for a true brown without any other tones in it, this is the shade for you! I personally don't know if I can pull it off and I don't think I'll wear it much now that winter is over, but maybe next fall I'll be able to wear it more.

Here's some arm swatches. As you can see, the colors are amazing and they dry beautifully. Even with the cons, I'm still very happy with these and I wear them a good amount.

I hope this review was helpful for some of you! It was fun to get all my thoughts on these in one place. A lot of the reviews I had looked up on the JS lipsticks were either not very helpful or didn't seem very honest. I wanted to be completely real in this post.

Let me know if you've ever tried Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks and if so, which ones are your favorite!

Thanks for reading!

  4. I'm loving the deep shades you've shared here babe. I also love that they stay on all day because if there is one thing I hate it's lipstick that needs to be reapplied over and over again!
